Knox County, Tennessee Inmate Search
A Knox County inmate search involves finding information about people currently in jail within the county. It can be done using court-provided resources or perusing third-party information repositories. The Knox County Sheriff’s Office oversees the operation of all jail facilities in the county and is thus responsible for official inmate searches, which are available through a central jail roster.
Presently, there are no state-run Tennessee Department of Corrections (TDOC) or federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) jails in the county, although some TDOC inmates are held in the county jails. The Knoxville Police Department also uses the central jail roster, as individuals arrested by its officers are held at any of the county’s main jails that are under the sheriff’s jurisdiction. The jail roster contains an inmate’s basic identification information, arrest and booking details, offense description, and the basic court information related to the incarceration.
How to Find an Inmate in Knox County Jail
Members of the public can learn if a person is currently in the custody of any of the jail facilities in Knox County through the Inmate Population portal. This web tool is provided by the sheriff’s office alongside the 24 Hours In Custody portal, which shows information about inmates booked into a jail facility within the last 24 hours. To verify information obtained from any of these online repositories, users may call the Inmate Services at (865) 281-6700 or visit the sheriff’s office/county jail at

How to Use the Knox County Jail Roster
The jail roster displays mugshot photos alongside basic incarceration information of current inmates on its homepage. Users can either browse through the inmates or manually search for a specific inmate by name using the steps below:
- Visit the Inmate Population portal (there’s a link on the sheriff’s homepage)
- Enter the inmate’s first and last name in the provided fields and click on ’Search.’
Inmates can also be located by filtering the roster using the first letter of the inmate’s last name. To do this, click on the corresponding letter of the alphabet shown just above the search section. This will display a list of inmates whose last names begin with that letter. A user can then review the results to find the specific inmate they are searching for.

Knox County Visitation Rules and Schedules
Visitations at jail facilities in Knox County can be on-site or off-site, scheduled or unscheduled, and are all via video. Inmates are allowed two scheduled visits per week, while unscheduled visits are unlimited. Visitors can schedule visits online. On-site visitations are conducted at the on-site internal visitation center located at each jail facility and are limited to 30 minutes per visit. Offsite (remote) visitation, on the other hand, requires a desktop or smartphone with internet access.
Also, inmates are allowed to call friends and family on an unscheduled video chat (paid for out of the inmate’s account). There is no charge for on-site visitation. Note that an on-site visitor may be denied access to an inmate or have their visit terminated if the visitor
- Is under the influence of drugs or alcohol
- Fails or refuses to present adequate identification information
- Does not submit themselves to the agency’s search procedures
- Fails to properly supervise any children in their company
- Violates a facility’s visitation rules
- Possesses contraband items at the time of their visit
